Earth Day is a good time to reflect on our responsibility to protect the planet for future generations. This year’s theme, invest in our planet, highlights our individual and collective responsibility to take action towards the climate crisis; driving change towards a green and equitable future. A report published by PwC this week revealed how closely natural ecosystems and biodiversity are linked to the world economy, with 55% of the world’s GDP ‘moderately or highly dependent’ on nature. The global wildlife population has declined 69% since 1970 – this number might seem abstract in isolation, but there is tangible evidence sitting on your street or driveway. A 20-year study in Denmark, from 1997-2017, found an 80% decline in the number of dead insects on car bumpers over this period. Anyone who washed their parent’s car when they were younger, chiselling away with a sponge at the bugs pasted to the bumper, might be surprised to notice the relatively unblemished fronts of their own vehicles. Concerningly, this reduction can’t be attributed to the improved aerodynamics of modern cars: a 2019 UK study found that modern cars killed more insects than boxier, older models.
It is clear that we need to take significant steps to reverse this decline.
